Prayer of Forgiveness.

Here is a prayer of forgiveness, woven with scripture, for both receiving God's forgiveness and extending it to others.

A Prayer of Forgiveness

In the name of Jesus, I come to You, Father.

I come before You with a humble heart, acknowledging my need for Your grace. I have sinned against You in my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I have chosen my own way instead of Yours. I have fallen short of Your perfect glory.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

I confess my specific sins to You now... (Speak them aloud or in your heart here)

Thank you, Lord, for Your promise. I receive Your forgiveness now, through the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. I believe that Your blood washes me clean and makes me white as snow. I step out from under any burden of guilt or shame, for there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

And now, Lord, I choose to forgive others.

You have forgiven me a debt I could never pay. Help me to forgive those who have sinned against me, just as You have forgiven me. I release [Name of person(s)] from the debt I feel they owe me. I let go of my anger, my bitterness, and my right to revenge. I hand this hurt over to You, the righteous Judge.

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:14-15)

This is an act of my will, by Your strength. Heal my heart where I have been wounded. Help me to see them through Your eyes of love and mercy.

Your mercy has made me free. Help me to walk in that freedom today, as a forgiven and forgiving child of God.
