Amen. This is the great exchange that profits nothing—to gain all the world can offer, only to discover you have lost the One for whom you were made. Jesus Himself posed this piercing question, and it echoes down through every generation:
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?"
— Matthew 16:26 (ESV)
"What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?"
— Mark 8:36 (NIV)

The Great Question: What Profit in Losing God?
To gain the world—to accumulate its wealth, achieve its honors, possess its pleasures, conquer its kingdoms—and yet lose God is the most tragic arithmetic ever calculated.
For what is the world compared to the soul?
What are possessions compared to the Possessor?
What is time compared to eternity?
What is the applause of men compared to the "Well done" of God?

A Prayer of Reorientation
Lord God, my Greatest Treasure,
The world spreads its glittering wares before me daily—
promising satisfaction, demanding my devotion,
whispering that more will finally be enough.
But I have tasted and seen:
You are good.
You are better.
You are everything.
Forgive me for the times I have chased shadows
while the Substance stood before me.
Forgive me for clutching at dust
while Your hand reached out to hold me.
Today I reorient my heart:
I would rather be poor with You than rich without You.
I would rather be unknown to the world and known by You
than celebrated by millions and forgotten by heaven.
Keep me from the slow drift
that trades eternity for trinkets.
Anchor my soul in the only treasure that lasts—
You.
In the name of Jesus,
in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge,
Amen.

A Hebrew Word for This Truth
בֶּצַע (Betsa) – Profit, gain, unjust gain. The word carries the sense of cutting off—because to gain the world by unrighteous means is to cut yourself off from what truly matters.

The Wisdom of the Ages
The World Says Scripture Says
"Gain all you can." "Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere." (Psalm 84:10)
"Climb the ladder." "Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest." (Matthew 18:4)
"Build your empire." "Seek first the kingdom of God." (Matthew 6:33)
"Secure your future." "I am your exceeding great reward." (Genesis 15:1, KJV)

A Blessing for the One Who Chooses God
May you have the wisdom to see through the world's illusions.
May you have the courage to walk away from its empty promises.
May you have the joy of discovering, again and again,
that He is enough.
You are not missing out.
You are gaining everything.
