He Will Not Slumber
A Reflection on Psalm 121:3-4
He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, He who watches over Israel never tires, never rests, never numbers
The hours by human measure, for He dwells outside of time.
His vigilance is constant, His watch is always prime.
He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. (Psalm 121:3-4)
God will not sleep or slumber—through the darkest watch of night,
When fear creeps in and shadows loom and nothing seems to be right,
His eyes are open, wide awake, attentive to your cry.
He sees the tear before it falls, He hears the whispered sigh.
The gods of wood and stone must be shaken to be stirred.
Their prophets shout and cut themselves to be seen and heard.
But our God needs no waking—He is ever, always aware.
Before you speak the prayer, He knows, and He is already there.
Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. (Psalm 139:4)
When the enemy creeps in like a thief under the cover of night,
When he thinks to catch you unaware, to steal away your light,
The Keeper of Israel is already standing guard,
His presence all around you, His angels standing hard.
When you toss upon your bed and sleep eludes your grasp,
When anxious thoughts assail you and fears have you in their clasp,
Remember that your Guardian is never tired or weak,
And in His constant watching, He gives you the peace you seek.
I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8)
God will not sleep or slumber—He is the ever-watchful Eye,
The Shepherd who keeps vigil while the wolves are lurking nigh.
He is the sentry on the tower, the guard outside the gate,
And He who watches over you never comes too late.
So rest, my soul, in His safe care. Let go your anxious hold.
The One who never sleeps is near—a shelter from the cold.
He will not let your foot slip, He will not close His eye.
The Keeper of your soul is awake—beneath His watch, you lie.
Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. (Psalm 121:4)
He neither slumbers nor sleeps—this is your peace, your rest.
The Ever-Watchful One holds you close against His breast.
So close your eyes, let go your fears, and let your breathing slow.
The Keeper of your soul is awake, and He will never let you go.
Amen.
