I Am in the House of the Lord
A Reflection on Dwelling in His Presence
I am in the house of the Lord—not just for an hour,
Not just for a Sunday morning, not just when I have the power
To make my way to a building made by human hands,
But in the sanctuary of His presence where my soul forever stands.
One thing I have asked from the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. (Psalm 27:4, AMP)
I am in the house of the Lord—this body is His temple,
A dwelling place for the Most High, a vessel made for example
Of what it means to carry His presence wherever I may go.
The Spirit of the living God has made His home below,
Within this fragile frame of dust, this earthen jar of clay,
To show that all surpassing power is His and His alone each day.
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? (1 Corinthians 6:19)
I am in the house of the Lord—in the quiet of the morning,
In the busy of the marketplace, in the joy and in the mourning.
For where can I flee from His presence? Where can I hide from His face?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are in that place.
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. (Psalm 139:7-8)
I am in the house of the Lord—and in this house, I find
Refuge from the storm outside, a peace for my troubled mind.
The door is always open, the welcome always warm,
The Father runs to meet me, He protects me from all harm.
In His house there is forgiveness, there is healing, there is grace,
There is a table spread with bounty, there is a warm and safe embrace.
In My Father's house are many rooms. If that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? (John 14:2, BSB)
I am in the house of the Lord—and in this house, I sing
With all the saints and angels, with every living thing.
I join the endless chorus that rises day and night,
To Him who sits upon the throne, the Lamb, the perfect Light.
"Holy, holy, holy," the four living creatures cry,
And with them, I lift up my voice and worship the Most High.
After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven... And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. (Revelation 4:1-3, paraphrased)
I am in the house of the Lord—and here I am made whole,
Body, spirit, mind, and soul. The Shepherd tends His sheep,
He leads me beside still waters, He gives me rest and peace so deep.
He restores my soul and guides me in paths of righteousness,
And in the valley of the shadow, I will fear no evil or distress.
Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23:6)
So let me never leave this house, let me never wander far,
Let my heart remain within these walls, let His presence be my star.
For I am in the house of the Lord—not just for time, but for eternity,
And the One who dwells within these walls has promised to dwell in me.
I am in the house of the Lord.
Not because of where I stand, but because of whose I am.
I am in the house of the Lord.
Forever. Amen.
