Without faith, You cannot Please God.

Without Faith, It Is Impossible to Please God

A Reflection on Hebrews 11:6

Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

Not without good works, though they have their place.

Not without moral living, though it reflects His grace.

Not without religious ritual, though it can point the way.

But without faith—the essential foundation, the non-negotiable—we cannot please Him, cannot reach His expectation.

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

For faith is the hand that reaches out to take what God has offered.

Faith is the trust that says, "I believe Your word is true,"

Not just in what I see, but in what I cannot view.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence unseen,

The confident assurance that God is who He says He's been.

Without faith, the most eloquent prayers are but empty noise.

Without faith, the most generous giving is but a hollow choice.

Without faith, the most sacrificial service, the most devoted deeds,

Are like a ship without a sail, a garden without seeds.

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." (Romans 1:17)

Consider those who pleased Him—the heroes of the ages:

Abel offered a better sacrifice, and still his faith engages

Our hearts, for though he died, his faith still speaks.

Enoch walked with God, and for his faith, he sought what the world seeks

But cannot find—intimacy with the One who is unseen.

Noah built an ark on dry ground, believing what had never been:

That rain would fall, that judgment would come, that God would save his seed.

His faith condemned the world and met his deepest need.

Abraham left his home, not knowing where he went.

Sarah conceived in old age, believing what God had sent.

Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

Jacob worshiped as he leaned on his staff, his earthly journey done.

Joseph spoke of the exodus, though he would not live to see it.

Moses chose mistreatment with God's people rather than Egypt's riches—he saw it

As greater wealth than all of Pharaoh's gold,

Because he looked ahead to the reward that would unfold.

By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land.

By faith the walls of Jericho fell at the command.

By faith Rahab welcomed the spies and was not killed with the disobedient.

And what more shall I say? Time would fail me to tell of those who were obedient—

Who conquered kingdoms, administered justice, gained what was promised,

Who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of flames, and escaped the edge of the sword.

Whose weakness was turned to strength, who became powerful in battle.

By faith, they were sawed in two, stoned, killed by the sword.

They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted, and mistreated—

The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and holes in the ground.

These were all commended for their faith, yet none received what had been promised,

Since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. (Hebrews 11:29-40, paraphrased)

Why is faith so essential? Because it honors God's character.

It says, "You are who You say You are—a Rewarder, a loving Father."

It says, "You can be trusted with my life, my future, my all."

It says, "I believe You exist, and I will answer when You call."

Faith pleases God because it rests in His goodness, not our own.

It leans on His righteousness, not the seeds we've sown.

It boasts not in what we've done, but in what He has done.

It points to the cross and says, "Through Christ, the victory is won."

For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. (Romans 3:28)

So let me live by faith—not by sight, not by feeling, not by fear.

Let me trust Him when the path is dark and when the way is clear.

Let me believe He is who He says, and that He will do what He's promised,

That those who earnestly seek Him will never, ever be promised

Anything less than His presence, His power, His peace, His provision,

And ultimately, the reward of eternal vision—

Seeing Him face to face, the One my faith has loved,

And hearing, "Well done, good and faithful child, enter the joy prepared for you above."

Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

But with faith—even as small as a mustard seed—

I can move mountains. I can meet every need.

I can walk on water. I can calm the storm.

I can live a life that pleases Him, transformed.

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.

Increase my faith. Give my doubt relief.

I want to please You—not by my striving,

But by trusting, believing, and truly thriving

In the confidence that You are good,

That You reward those who seek You, as You said You would.

Amen.
