Pray in Secret, Rejoice Openly
A Reflection on Matthew 6:6
When you pray, go into your secret place—
Not the corner of the room where others can see your face,
But the quiet chamber of the heart, the inner sanctuary's space,
Where no eye but His can witness, where no voice but grace can trace.
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you openly. (Matthew 6:6)
Go into the secret place—shut the door on the noise of the day,
On the clamor of voices, on the demands that pull you away.
Shut out the need to perform, to appear, to be seen,
And let yourself be fully known by the One who makes you clean.
It is there, in the quiet, in the holy, hidden space,
That you meet the Father face to face.
Not rushing through a list of wants and needs,
But simply being present where His love plants seeds.
Your Father sees in secret—every tear, every whispered prayer,
Every longing you cannot voice, every burden you cannot bear.
He sees the wrestling of your soul, the questions without end,
He sees the silent worship of a heart that calls Him friend.
Nothing escapes His notice in that secret, sacred space.
He sees the ache behind your words, the hope upon your face.
He sees not just the prayer you pray, but the one who prays it through—
And in His seeing, He responds with love both deep and true.
For your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:8)
And He will reward you openly—not with trumpets or with praise,
Not with the fleeting honors that this fallen world displays.
But with the quiet confidence that you are truly known,
With peace that passes understanding, a strength that is your own.
He will reward you openly with blessings in plain sight,
With doors that open at His word, with burdens turned to light.
With relationships restored, with provision for each need,
With a life that bears the fragrant fruit of a heart that's been freed.
Sometimes the open reward is the change He works in you—
The patience born of waiting, the faith that's proven true.
The kindness that now flows more freely from a heart He's touched,
The wisdom that you never had, the love that now means so much.
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:8)
Sometimes the open reward is the way He uses you
To be an answer to another's prayer, to help them make it through.
It's the testimony on your lips of how He came through for you,
That gives another weary soul the hope to start anew.
So go into your secret place—don't let a day go by
Without that holy rendezvous beneath the watching eye
Of your Father who delights to meet you in that hidden space,
And who will bless you openly with the sunshine of His face.
Pray in secret. Pour out your heart where only He can hear.
Lay down your burdens, confess your fears, let Him draw near.
For the One who sees in secret, who knows your inmost thought,
Will reward you openly with more than you have sought.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)
So find your room, shut the door, and let the prayer begin.
Your Father waits to meet you there—to cleanse, to heal, to win
Your heart completely for Himself, to fill you with His grace,
And then to bless you openly before the human race.
This is the promise. This is the way.
Pray in secret, and watch Him display
His faithfulness, His power, His love so true—
Your Father who sees will reward you.
Amen.
