As a Man Speaks
"For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." (Matthew 12:37)
Lord, Your Word says plainly:
"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." (Matthew 12:34)
So a man is not merely what he thinks in secret,
nor what he feels in the quiet chambers of his soul.
A man is what he speaks.
For speech is the revealer—
the tongue is the rudder that steers the ship of the self. (James 3:4-5)
What I speak, I become.
When I speak fear, I grow a harvest of trembling.
When I speak complaint, I cultivate a garden of bitterness.
When I speak defeat, I build walls around my own captivity.
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruit." (Proverbs 18:21)
But Lord, let me speak life.
Let my words be seeds planted in good soil—
words of faith, not of fear.
Words of hope, not of despair.
Words of blessing, not of curse.
"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths,
but only such as is good for building up." (Ephesians 4:29)
For You spoke the universe into being.
You said, "Let there be light," and there was light. (Genesis 1:3)
I am made in Your image, a speaking image.
My words carry weight in the spiritual realm.
They shape my tomorrows.
They form the atmosphere of my soul.
So I choose today to align my speech with Your truth.
I will not say, "I cannot," when You say, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)
I will not say, "I am alone," when You promised, "I am with you always." (Matthew 28:20)
I will not say, "I have no hope," when You are "the God of hope." (Romans 15:13)
Let my words be the echo of heaven.
Confession of Your goodness,
declaration of Your faithfulness,
proclamation of Your power at work in me.
"I believed, therefore I have spoken." (Psalm 116:10)
A man is what he speaks.
Then let me be a man of faith-filled, love-soaked, truth-spoken words.
For by my words, I am shaped.
And by Your grace, I am being made new—
one utterance at a time.
Amen.
