Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy
A Reflection on John 16:20, Psalm 30:5, and Isaiah 61:3
Your sorrow will turn into joy—not a distant, future hope,
But a promise that will lift you up and help you cope.
The night of weeping may seem long, the tears may fall like rain,
But joy is coming with the morning; your sorrow will not remain.
“You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.” (John 16:20)
Sorrow—the weight that presses on your chest,
The silent tears, the restless nights, the aching in your chest.
It feels eternal, never-ending, like the sun will never rise,
But the One who holds the morning knows the tears within your eyes.
But joy—not a fleeting, fragile smile,
But the deep, abiding gladness that stays through every trial.
It is the oil of gladness for the mourning soul,
The strength that makes the broken spirit whole.
Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
Your sorrow will turn into joy—not by forgetting the pain,
But by finding that the Gardener has been working in the rain.
He takes the ashes, the grief, the loss,
And trades them for a beauty that will never exhaust.
A crown of beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
A garment of praise for the spirit of despair.
This is His promise, His healing, His loving care.
“To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” (Isaiah 61:3)
So hold on, weary heart. The night is almost done.
The dawn is breaking, the victory is won.
Your sorrow is not the final word, not the last page of your story.
Joy is coming, full of glory.
Your sorrow will turn into joy. This is the promise of the King.
The same power that rolled the stone away will make your spirit sing.
So lift your head, lift your voice, lift your eyes above—
Your sorrow has met its end in the boundless love of God.
Amen.
