Lord of Hosts
Lord of hosts—the name that makes the heavens tremble,
The title before which angel armies assemble.
Commander of the starry hosts, the sun and moon's Commander,
The One who speaks and legions bow, the universe's Slander
Of every power that dares to rise against His sovereign throne.
Lord of hosts—yet He calls me His own.
Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. (Psalm 24:10)
Lord of hosts—the God who fights for His own,
Who never leaves His children to face the battle alone.
When the enemy surrounds me, when the war is fierce and long,
I remember that the Lord of hosts is already marching strong.
His chariots of fire surround me, His angels guard my way,
The Lord of hosts is with me—what can man do today?
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. (Psalm 46:7)
Lord of hosts—He sees the unseen war,
The battles in the spirit realm that rage forevermore.
He knows the schemes the enemy plans beneath the cover dark,
He sees the arrows aimed at me, He recognizes every mark.
And before a single weapon finds its mark upon my soul,
The Lord of hosts has spoken and made the wounded whole.
Lord of hosts—the name that made the prophet tremble,
When he saw the Lord high and lifted up, holy and unassailable.
The seraphim cried holy, the temple shook and swayed,
And Isaiah fell in worship, of his unclean lips afraid.
But the Lord of hosts reached down to touch, with coal from off the altar,
And spoke the words of pardon that would never, ever falter.
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted... And I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined!"... Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand... and he touched my mouth and said, "Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away." (Isaiah 6:1, 5-7)
Lord of hosts—the One who hears the cry of the oppressed,
Who sees the widow's tears and grants the orphan rest.
He is a father to the fatherless, a defender of the weak,
The One who lifts the humble and comforts those who seek.
His host is not just warriors, but the broken and the low,
For the Lord of hosts delights to let His tender mercy show.
The Lord of hosts has sworn saying, "Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand." (Isaiah 14:24)
Lord of hosts—He is the same yesterday and forever,
The One whose purposes will stand, whose plans will never sever.
What He has promised, He will do; what He has spoken, stands.
The Lord of hosts holds history firmly in His hands.
Nations rise and nations fall at the whisper of His voice,
And in His sovereign will, His people can rejoice.
The Lord of hosts has planned, who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back? (Isaiah 14:27)
So when I face the battles that seem too great to fight,
When the enemy is many and the day has turned to night,
I will lift my eyes to heaven and remember who is there—
The Lord of hosts, the mighty One, who hears my every prayer.
He fights for me, He stands with me, He holds me in His hand,
The Lord of hosts—my refuge in every war and every land.
Lord of hosts, be with us.
Lord of hosts, fight for us.
Lord of hosts, keep us in Your care.
For Your name is glorious, Your power victorious,
And nothing can compare to knowing You—
Lord of hosts, who calls me His own.
Amen.
