Holy Spirit, We Need You
A Prayer of Dependence and Invitation
Holy Spirit, we need You—not just in moments of despair,
But in every breath, every thought, every word, every prayer.
We cannot walk this journey alone, we cannot stand in our own might,
We need Your fire, Your wind, Your presence, Your light.
“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13)
We need You in the morning, when the day is fresh and new,
To guide our steps, to shape our thoughts, to make our spirits true.
We need You at noontide, when the battle presses hard,
To be our strength, our shield, our sword, our guard.
We need You in the evening, when the shadows start to fall,
To be our peace, our rest, our comfort, our all.
We need You in the night, when sleep eludes our eyes,
To calm our fears, to still our souls, to hear our silent cries.
The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (Romans 8:26)
Holy Spirit, we need You—to teach us, to guide us, to fill,
To break every chain, to heal every ill.
We are empty vessels waiting to be filled,
We are thirsty ground longing to be stilled.
Come as the wind that blows where it chooses,
Come as the fire that purifies and uses.
Come as the dove that brings peace and rest,
Come as the Comforter, the One who knows us best.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26)
Holy Spirit, we need You—not for a moment, not for a day,
But for every step, every breath, every word we say.
Fill us, lead us, use us, Lord,
Let Your presence be our reward.
We open our hearts, we lift our hands,
We welcome You into our lands.
Holy Spirit, we need You—now and always,
We surrender to Your Spirit, for all our days.
Amen.
