I Will Sing the Goodness of God
A Reflection on Psalm 23:6, Psalm 89:1, and Psalm 145:7
I will sing the goodness of God—not just with words, but with my life,
With every breath, with every step, with every inner strife.
For His goodness has pursued me, it has chased me down and found me,
It has wrapped me in its mercy and with steadfast love surrounds me.
Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life. (Psalm 23:6)
I will sing of His goodness in the morning, when the sun begins to rise,
In the evening, when the moon adorns the skies.
I will sing it in the valley, when the shadows stretch so deep,
And I will sing it on the mountain, when the promises I keep.
His goodness is not a reward for the good that I have done,
But the sun that rises daily, the mercy that is won.
It is the rain that falls on just and unjust ground,
The kindness that surrounds me, the love that I have found.
I will sing of the Lord's great love forever; with my mouth I will make Your faithfulness known through all generations. (Psalm 89:1)
I will sing the goodness of God—through every trial and test,
For He is good, and He is faithful, and He gives me rest.
When I am weak, His goodness holds me tight,
When I am strong, His goodness gives me light.
He is good in the waiting, when the answer seems delayed,
He is good in the harvest, when my cup is overlaid.
He is good in the silence, when I cannot hear His voice,
And He is good in the chaos, when I have no other choice.
They will celebrate Your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of Your righteousness. (Psalm 145:7)
So I will sing the goodness of God—not because I understand,
But because He holds my future in the hollow of His hand.
I have tasted, I have seen, I know that it is true:
The Lord is good—and He is good to me and you.
His goodness is running after me. It never stops. It never will.
It chases me with mercy and with love that makes me still.
So I will lift my voice, I will lift my hands,
I will sing the goodness of God throughout all the lands.
All my life, You have been faithful.
All my life, You have been so, so good.
And I will sing the goodness of God—
Forever, as I should.
Amen.
