This is the glorious, foundational promise of the Gospel—the ultimate gift that cannot be earned, only received.
Here is a meditation on this beautiful truth from Romans 6:23.

The Gift of God
The wage of sin is death, the Law does say,
A debt that we could never pay.
A holy,righteous, perfect cost,
For every single soul that's lost.
We try to work, we strive, we plead,
To satisfy this deepest need.
But all our righteousness is stained,
No purity in us remained.
But in that hopeless, desperate place,
A revelation of God's grace:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”(Romans 6:23)
A gift—not something to be bought,
By holy deed or earnest thought.
Not a reward for those who’ve striven,
But offered freely,sent from heaven.
The gift is eternal life to know,
The One from whom all blessings flow.
It’s not just endless,future years,
But knowing God,and banishing fears.
It starts right now, this very hour,
In Christ,a resurrected power.
And how is this great gift received?
In whom must our heart have believed?
“…through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
The only path, the one true cord.
His life,His death, His blood, His cross,
To save our souls from endless loss.
So do not strive, and do not try,
Upon your own weak strength rely.
But open up your hands,receive,
And on His promise,simply believe.
The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Reach out and take it.
It is for you.

What This Means:
This single verse contrasts two opposing systems:
1. The System of Works (Wages): You earn what you deserve. The "wage" or payment for our sin is spiritual and eternal death—separation from God.
2. The System of Grace (Gift): You receive what you do not deserve. The "gift" is the very opposite of what we earned—it is eternal life, a right relationship with God that begins now and lasts forever.
This gift is exclusively found "in Christ Jesus our Lord." He is the wrapping paper, the bow, and the content of the gift itself. To have Him is to have eternal life (1 John 5:11-12).
A Prayer to Receive the Gift:
"Heavenly Father,
I understand that I have sinned and that the rightful payment for my sin is death. I confess that I cannot save myself through my own efforts.
Thank you for Your incredible gift. Thank you that Jesus Christ paid the price for my sin on the cross so that I could receive eternal life as a free gift.
Right now, I stop trying to earn it. I open my heart and I receive Your gift. I put my full trust in Jesus Christ alone as my Lord and Savior.
Thank you for the eternal life I now have in Him. My trust is in Your promise, not my feelings.
In Jesus' name, Amen."
