Amen. This is the heart of the Gospel—the blessed inversion of the kingdom, where God's Anointed One is sent not to the proud and powerful, but to the poor, the broken, the captive, and the mourner. Here is a celebration of that divine mission.
---
For the Poor and Brokenhearted
He did not come for palaces of gold,
For tales of glory to be told
To those already full and pleased,
Whom life had comforted and eased.
He came for the poor—in spirit, in purse,
For those beneath the universe
Who know their need, who feel the sting,
To them He comes, their song to sing.
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.”(Luke 4:18)
He came for the brokenhearted—crushed and torn,
By grief and loss,by hope forlorn.
To bind the wounds no eye can see,
To set the captive spirit free.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”(Psalm 147:3)
He came for the ones who cannot hide the ache,
For every heart that’s about to break.
For those who mourn, for those who weep,
His promises are yours to keep.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”(Matthew 5:3-4)
So if your hands are empty today,
If all your strength has drained away,
If your heart is shattered, piece by piece,
He came for you.Let sorrow cease.
You are not overlooked, you are not last,
You are the one He holds fast.
The King of Heaven,by sorrow scarred,
Comes near to you—oh,blessed, blessed Lord!
Jesus came for the poor and brokenhearted.
And He is here, right where you are.
Lift up your head.Behold your King.
Let the heavens and the earth now sing.
Amen.
