If God Is for Us, Who Can Be Against Us?
A Reflection on Romans 8:31
If God is for us, who can be against us?
This is the battle cry, the shield, the chorus
That silences every accusing voice,
That leaves the enemy no other choice
But to flee before the mighty power
Of the One who reigns in this very hour.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
If God is for us—the Creator of all,
The One who holds the stars in thrall,
The King of kings, the Lord of lords,
The wielder of heaven's angelic swords—
Then what is any earthly foe,
Any power on earth, any force below?
Who can be against us—and succeed?
No enemy, no rival, no mortal greed.
They may rage, they may roar, they may plot and plan,
But the One who is for us is greater than man.
The mountains may shake, the oceans may roar,
But the God who is for us has opened the door.
The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
If God is for us, then no weapon formed against us shall stand.
No scheme of darkness, no evil hand
Can snatch us from the Father's care,
For He has declared us His children fair.
He did not spare His own Son, but gave Him for all,
And with Him, He gives us everything—every good gift, every call.
He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32)
Who can bring a charge against God's elect?
It is God who justifies—who can object?
Christ Jesus who died, who was raised to the throne,
Is interceding for us, making our cause His own.
Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. (Romans 8:34)
So let the world rise up and rage,
Let fear and doubt turn their darkest page.
Let sickness come and sorrow press,
Let loss and grief leave their deepest mess—
But still we will whisper, still we will shout:
If God is for us, we will not doubt.
What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:35, 37)
For nothing can sever us from His love—
Not death, not life, not powers above,
Not angels, not demons, not present, not future,
Not height, not depth, no earthly suture.
The God who is for us has sealed us His own,
And we will never, ever walk alone.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
So lift your head, you weary one.
The battle is over, the victory won.
If God is for you—and He always is—
Then nothing can stand against you, nothing can dismiss.
If God is for us, who can be against us?
No one. No thing. No power. No fear.
For the Lord Almighty is already here.
Amen.
