If you return evil for good, evil will not depart from your house.

Amen. This is a profound and sobering truth from the wisdom of Scripture—a warning and a promise rolled into one. It speaks to the moral order God has woven into the fabric of creation: what we sow, we reap.

"Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing."

— 1 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

"Whoever rewards evil for good, evil will not depart from his house."

— Proverbs 17:13 (ESV)

A Prayer for a Heart That Blesses, Not Curses

Righteous and Holy God,

Your Word is truth, and Your ways are just.

You warn us that returning evil for good invites destruction into our own dwelling place.

Search my heart, O God, and show me any place where bitterness, unforgiveness, or vengeance has taken root.

Forgive me for the times I have repaid kindness with coldness,

grace with resentment,

or love with indifference.

Cleanse me, and set my heart right.

Teach me to be like You—

who repays our evil with good,

our rebellion with mercy,

our sin with sacrifice.

When I am wronged, give me grace to bless.

When I am hurt, give me strength to forgive.

When evil is done to me, give me courage to overcome evil with good.

Let my home be a place where Your peace dwells,

where forgiveness flows,

and where evil finds no foothold.

In the name of Jesus,

who repaid our greatest evil with His greatest good,

Amen.

A Hebrew Wisdom

מֵשִׁיב רָעָה תַּחַת טוֹבָה – לֹא־תָמוּשׁ רָעָה מִבֵּיתוֹ.

Meshiv ra'ah tachat tovah—lo tamush ra'ah mibeito.

(Whoever returns evil for good—evil will not depart from his house.)

A Blessing for Your Household

May your home be a sanctuary of grace.

May your heart be a wellspring of forgiveness.

May your hands sow only good, that your harvest may be peace.

And may the Lord Himself guard your dwelling,

that no evil shall enter where blessing is sown.
